Tower of Despair

...I'll probably have to scale down the ambitious 100 floors to 50 instead, there is just so many original ideas you can have for every floor before they start looking the same. xD
Or I could copy the first 50 floors and make the last half identical, just with different treasures, enemies and bosses, what do you guys think?

  1. Heya :)

The Tower of Despair on my playthroughs always felt like a endurance challenge with randomized maps. If that is the look and feel you wanted the tower to have, then your plan of copying the first 50 floors with the different treasures, enemies and bosses would not be a bad solution.

Thanks again for such a varied and awesome game though!

  2. Maybe just add minor modifications or randomize some elements for pseudo- procedual- generated maps (e.g. a maze which has randomly opened/closed doors). Might be to much work for a bonus-dungeon though.

Just copying the first 50 floors sounds fine.

  3. Maybe mirror them or simply add a new exit if you copy the first 50. It is confusing as it is so the same floors twice just a little bit different would be a good idea^^

    1. Mirroring them would be the easiest thing to do. I think some of them are symmetrical though, so you would have to make a few change so they are not.

    2. Maybe swich the exit somewhere else were they are symmetrical or simply upside down^^

    3. I don't think mirroring them is so easy. I think Gabe had to re-sort them manually, because the RPGMaker does not provide a mirror option

  4. 100 floor and keep it a tough challenge like it should be .

  5. If you have enough different monsters sets for 100 floors then you can copy the 1st ones, but a 100 floors with just mushrooms sounds too boring to me. Anyway i'll bite everything you'll do =)

  6. could make the last 50 a mirror version.

  8. I only climb the tower for the bosses and the chests, and since the path is random, i don't think you must do 100 floors, just 10 bosses (that asside mirroring floors sounds good to me).

Thanks for this game anyway i love it.

  9. I am wondering, did you consider the possibility of getting animals on greenfield land, i 'm sure farah would be delighted to have some horses or broncallos at her disposal...

    1. Indeed, my only concern is that Greenfield is a pretty big map, and having too many NPC's moving around might make the map lag...but we'll see!

    2. As I recall, you have a fenced field in front of the mansion. This one is screaming for some cattle, don't you think?

  10. I'd prefer 100, but if you decide to go with only 50 at least make the rest optional (though I think it should be mandatory).

  11. I think that, if you wanted, you could copy the first 50 floors but change things around a little (color, object placement, enemy strength and type, etc). That would help give the tower some variation as well as keep it simple for you, rather than having to design 50 brand new floors. Maybe reverse the order, too. Like after you beat the 50th floor, you have to do all the floors again in reverse, sort've a symbolic thing. Y'know, you end where you begin.

  12. I agree with the 100 floors thing, you can simply copy the first 50 floors if you want but the main reason i want 100 floors would be that im a loot whore xD! sure, i might ditch the weapon/item if ive got a better one or no use for it but i ALWAYS want to find and check out more loot. i have absolutely no problem fighting the same boss twice for different loot (most RPGers dont)and the way your talking anyway i would assume you would change their strength for the higher levels anyway. As long as their at least a slight challenge i dont believe anyone would have a problem with the 100 floor idea. and im already planning on putting dozens of hours into the game anyway so there no real loss.

  13. To be honest, if there are 50 or 100 floors, I'll play the game either way, because it's TOO DAMN AWESOME!! So believe me, you don't need 100 floors if you feel that would be a lot of work, but I have to admit, if the last boss where more a rival than a monster...that would be one hell of a fight!

  14. What about not just mirroring the floors, but rotate them? then you can get slightly different floors and a maximum of 400(!!). but i think, 100 floors will be enough. Hope to see the full version soon. Can't wait to get my fingers to it!

  16. The tower is called Tower of Despair, so to make it live up for its reputation and be more despairing, it should have 100 floors instead of 50. It is ok to copy the first 50 floor, give it harder enemies and new treasures. Just make sure that the player can not enter those floors before he beat the 5th boss of the tower. And make the enemies as hard to beat as the golem in the Temple of Sun.
I am looking forward for this despairing challenge ;)

  17. I believe it should be 100 as well. Some of the best games I have played have 100 floor dungeons of a sort, it provides a good challenge and feels rewarding once you beat it. Usually it is a good sum of what the player can accomplish with their characters.

  18. If you really wanted it to be a tower of despair then you could make it a non-random tower but instead have multiple passages that lead to dead-ends or go down to lower levels and then back up. And if you created a "generic level set" (a group of levels that contain progressively difficult enemies of a certain kind, whether in level, element, or skill) you could place them between more unique levels that offer tougher enemies, better treasure, or rewards. This would make it easier to create a 100 floor tower with 10 sets of 10 slightly different levels.

i.e. If you go to a modern day skyscraper the different levels would be something along the lines of drones -> management -> H.R. -> lawyers -> politicians -> [boss floor] C.E.O.

    1. You can just use a cheat engine like I do. Here's the link to the site you can get it. https://sites.google.com/site/darklunas/sgedit

  20. On the one had, the prospect of mapping another 60+ floors seems painful. On the other, the more content, the merrier.

  21. If you dont feel that 50 will detract from the intent of making the Tower of Despair an actual high level challenge. Then stick with 100.

Maybe break it into manageable chunks. Like ten floors per week or two.

Or better yet, consider the Bosses first. Go with a theme off the bosses.
example: 10 bosses, Undead, Insect, Reptile, Beast, Avian/Humanoid *2 of each type*. Then try and have 10 levels per 'theme' of that boss. May help you have ideas for a mood or look. Could be a valuable clue to players of the possible type of boss they will encounter, so they can swap gear as required.(if they pay attention)

50 levels is challenging, but you originally planned for 100. And 100 will trully be worthy of the title. Tower of Despair.

A worthy accomplishment to successfully scale the entire damn thing.
