Legend of Queen Opala: Origin - Update

Thanks for all the support you guys gave me after the previous update, I appreciate it! :D

So, since last week I've been patching up a few minor issues in the game, added a little hard-to-miss secret, but spent most of the time with working on the gallery unlock mechanic I've been mentioning in the past and which the "Boss Gem" will be used for.
A preview of how it'll look is added below, but remember it's a work in progress and not final, so it may change in some ways with how it looks and what'll cost x amounts of Boss Gems.

Now, let me take a moment to explain how it'll all work!
Considering how some scenes have different outcomes and all variations might not be possible to unlock in a single playthrough, then add all the different CG styles you can choose, that would make for a LOT of playthroughs if you wish to unlock everything the game has to offer.
However, with this gallery mechanic, every scene you have come across in any version will become available for purchase in all the styles, Boss Gems will also be renamed and become more easier to obtain so you can get more of them in a single playthrough.
This way, it'll be up to you as a player if you want to play through the game multiple times because you enjoy the experience, or you can speed up you process by saving up Boss Gems and unlock already seen sequences in the gallery!

And no, Boss Gem's will not be available seperately as microtransactions... ;)

So yeah, see you guys again next week as always!

  1. First.
Do you plan on having many easter eggs or secrets in the game?

    1. The game already has quite a few of them and already more than the first two games combined, but most people probably won't find them. x3

    2. "There is one strange man who wanders here and says 'I already looked here' all the time" or something like that, yeah? )
Don't be so sure we do not notice them, Gabe. XD

    3. Well that sounds good but also bad if the secrets are too hard to find.

Reminds me on some games when the last secret was found 10 years later.
Think it was Serious sam iirc

    4. Reminds me of when I heard about this: http://kotaku.com/14-years-later-zelda-fans-discover-new-way-to-kill-win-1787459259

    5. Well, I don't really hide the secrets in obscure ways, more like they're easy to miss if you just go straight through the story. ^^

    6. Easter eggs? Do you mean like the mirror on the wall in the Steaming Tap tavern in Colussia?
Has anyone found the combination to unlock it yet?

      Delete
    7. Otharian that mirror was placed there for those people who had played past a certain point(in the beta I think)and could no longer trigger a certain scene to progress the story. The mirror was a fix planted by Gabe to trigger said scene so story content could progress as normal.

  2. Bal'Rana!!!!!!! The sexiest female pirate in gaming! Along with Dragon Ages Isabella. I hope her role is bigger and she can get a scene or 2 with Devon :)

    1. She'll have the same personality and history, but her concept is going to be tweaked to make her more of an original character. ^^

    2. Oh, interesting. Can't wait to see what you do with her!

    3. Or what you let US do with her RAWWWWWWWR!! X3

  3. Now this is a mechanic in theme what's the LOQO series, "Come one come all to Bal'Rana's Galleon Gallery, so what are you waiting for gem it in there!!!"
Anyway this is an awesome addition that leviates the conflict between the completionist and the roleplayer in some of us, so ya one big round of applause is in order !

    2. Had this mechanic planned for a long time, ever since the first boss AKA bridge Golem-cock-blocker way back in episode 1 since he also dropped Boss Gem...haters just take for granted I don't know what I'm doing. XD

    3. Yap, remember you mentioning it in previous posts Anyway it's nice to see it coming along......brilliantly, i'll see myself out!

  4. I'm curious, will Kythe's stats and skills transfer to Kythie once she recovers or will she get a new skill set and Kythe's skills and stats transfer to Tharg when "The Masked Mercenary" officially joins?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Whatever do you mean, what does Tharg have to do with the Masked Mercenary...!? ;P
But yeah, everything related to Kythe will transfer over to Kythie with nothing lost.

      Delete
    2. Why, she must be Beatrix's sister who's stolen Tharg from her, of course! I mean, she has the same pose battle pose as Beatrix does in the Journal, weapon, hair color, proportions, and she's apparently going to go talk to Krayden at the end of Episode II (a line that no one in the room at the time reacted to), so who else could she be ;P

      Ah, okay. Thanks! By the way, I sent you a message about this on patreon, but do betas for Origins release every month or does the time vary based on what's completed? I've only ever been a patron long enough to get a beta link once before (I think over a year ago), so I don't know the answer ^^;

      Delete
    3. It varies, but usually it's one beta per month...it's a bit slower right after a big release though, since it's like starting from scratch and I have to add more locations to the game and expand the world. :)

    4. RPGMaker allows a convenient mechanism to change a character's art, name, portrait, and sprite, while retaining everything else, so it's no issue to have Kythie keep all her sweet stats.
It's the same way to how easy it is to change the player character art while using the orb of restoration.
Different matter with Kythie is how it doesn't make much sense lore-wise, since she loses all her memories except the strongest emotions, so...

      Delete
    5. Selective memory loss, most people who lose their memories still keep their skills, you don't suddenly forget how to talk, walk or sprint.

  6. Sounds good, but i hope there will be a still a good reason to play more than once. i liked that in the earlier games.
Meaning, a few trading cards only avaible in ng+ and in ultimate etc like you did in your previous games.

To bad "ultimate" was more or less pointless since you could collect everything in ng+. Even the ultimates werent ultimate exclusive.

    1. Things that has bigger impacts on the story on a new playthrough has to wait until the game is completed since it otherwise would technically be working on two games as the same time, just within the same areas. x3

      Delete
  7. Hm, not sure if we talk about the same.
Trading cards on pillars ( in ng+) had story impact in your second game ? Cant remember that :D

  8. This is actually a really smart solution and the perfect middle ground between the two options - the first one being the one in the previous games, that is an item unlocking ALL the scenes instantly given on first full completion of the main story, and the second being the necessity of grinding scenes for a full unlock with multiple playthroughs.

Positive criticism out of the way, now I have... questions. For example, questions about the dating sim elements of the game. Basically...when? There's gifts in the game already for purchase, but you can't use them yet. And how will affection work? Unlock affection - unlock scene with character?
Also, when can we expect our party members and others to 'settle' inside Warrengard? As in their NPC characters will be inside and inter-actable? And will they just offer some minimal dialogue or have more purpose?
Also also, are some characters intentionally locked inside the renegade/heroic dialogue options, such as the Steel Demoness for now? You cannot unlock her scene (and the consequent procurer title) at the moment without picking a renegade choice.

    1. Party members are already in Castle Warrengard during the current build, they just didn't make it into the episode 2 release.
And I can't say when the dating sim elements will come into play, but they are likely going to be tied to the repeatable "sequences" I'm going to add in at a later point which also plays on the affection a bit more than everything else in the game.

  9. Awww no Micro transactions?

Then again with LOQO, nothing is micro ;-)

    1. Nothing is micro... Unless it's Ra'Tiki's breasts.

      Delete
    2. Don't get me wrong I hate micro-transactions but although it's not even remotely needed it's not a bad idea. That said I'm not even sure how that would work as all saves for the game are on your PC and the game would need an internet connection for them to work at the very least which may lose Gabe some fans(not many I think lol). So while not a really bad idea it's not really practical either.

    4. Maybe Gabe could do it through her patreon. Patrons who donate $1 or $2 a month can get some boss gems per month. Or, Gabe can do it through pay pal. I'm not advocating for micro transactions, but I don't hate them either. I'm not one to think a game will instantly be pay to win or terrible just because it has micro transactions. It depends on the game, though. If you can only get so far before it loses its fun and you're forced to use micro transactions to advance, especially in a pvp game then that's bad. But if you're buying something cosmetic or some currency because you simply don't feel like grinding but are perfectly capable of grinding to get what you want, then it's not too bad. Games like GTA Online, DC Universe Online, and even games like Assassins Creed (old and new) have pretty reasonable micro transactions in my opinion. As long as you can enjoy the game and get what you want or need without having to use micro transactions, then it's fine.

    5. The problem lies in how to get the gems to YOU. As I said it would require Gabe either edit the save which would have to be either on her PC(or somebody she trusts)or on a server or would require the game to connect to the internet which would once again require a server. Fact is even if such a thing was possible it would cost too much for Gabe to do it than it's worth. After all most people interested in the game have probably already played it through several times by now up to this point.

      Delete
    6. Oh I wasn't assuming all that, I assumed she would provide a code that would give a certain amount of Boss gems. And each code could only work once. So you get your payment confirmed on patreon, she sends a code, you use it on the mirror, and voila. Boss gems. Of course it probably wouldn't be that simple, but that's what I was thinking.

      Delete
    7. Also, as much as I like the game, I've been busy and haven't been able to play it multiple times like I want. College -_-

      Delete
    8. Even if there was a super easy and simple way to add microtransactions, I still wouldn't, because I personally hate them in games and think everything we have to pay for should've been included for free or added as free DLC as a "thank you" for purchasing the product.

I'm just old school when it comes to games. x3

      Delete
    9. lol I can understand that Gabe. Just thinking even though I too hate micro transactions so few people I think would use them for boss gems I think but if you could find something that might benefit the player the funds might help you. That said I agree with you completely about that. Besides I think even though Omegalock's idea about codes might do the job it would still take a lot of work to implement for too little reward.

  10. Hey Gabe, big fan of your work and I'm considering becoming a patrean just have to get paid first ^^'. But with this update I was thinking will there be a way to look through CG, illustrations, etc. quicker, I mean a way where you don't have to press ESC every time you want to look at the next picture? Much love <3

    1. Perhaps if restricted to each individual gallery page, but too much work to make it possible to quick-change every illustration in the game in one flow. :3

    2. Yea understandable, a slide mechanic would be cool for "one-handed" game play if you catch my drift ~_^

    1. What you do at the Gentlemen's Club doesn't improve or change anything, it's simply a way to replay it an infinite amount of times.

  14. Ooh, neat! I was wondering how many times I'd have to play through the whole thing to see everything, considering there's the eastern, western, not to mention multiple beastman variants...this system seems like it will cut out a lot of the bad kind of grinding, so we can stick to the fun kind :D

  16. I have to say... Osira's voicework and style is pretty great in Origins. I was kinda indifferent towards her all the way through LoQO 1 and 2. But now, with the awesome OST and impressive voicework and emotive portrait - I'm actually liking her. From the very 1st scene. Woaw.
